Shuh Narumiya is Professor of Drug Discovery Medicine, and Director of Medical Innovation Center, Kyoto University, Japan. He obtained M.D. in 1973 and Ph. D. in biochemistry in 1979 from Kyoto University, and received postdoctoral training in pharmacology at Wellcome Research Laboratories in Beckenham, England, in 1979-81. He was Professor in Pharmacology of Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in 1992-2013 before moving to the current position. He cloned the prostaglandin receptor family and separately discovered botulinum C3 exoenzyme and Y-27632, specific inhibitors of Rho GTPase and its effector, ROCK, respectively. His research therefore spans from pharmacology, cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to pathophysiology of diseases in these two areas. He published more than 500 original and review articles with the current H index of 129. He served as Dean, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, in 2004-2007. He received many honors including Gold Medal from the Giovanni Lorenzini Foundation and the Ulysses Medal from University College Dublin. He served as the President of the 18thWorld Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology in 2018.
